Why (better) assessment matters

Digital technology accounts for a significant share of global greenhouse gas emissions, and also affects energy, water, biodiversity and natural resources. Measuring these impacts is the first step towards reducing them. But organisations often lack reliable methods and data, life cycle assessment skills, and a way to track progress over time.

Our commons, open to all

Our resources cover the full life cycle and multiple impact criteria, build on the work of leading organisations (ADEME, INR, CNRS, Shift Project…), and are reviewed by experts. All available under a CC BY-SA 4.0 licence.

Tools

7 open source tools to assess the impact of equipment, servers, cloud, AI and digital services: BoaviztAPI, BoAgent, BoAmps, CloudScanner, Datavizta, e-footprint and Energizta.

Data

Key indicators for managing a sustainable IT approach, and an overview of the regulatory and voluntary frameworks that apply to your organisation.

Methodologies

EROOM, an open source compass to identify your most energy-intensive digital services in 10 to 15 minutes, and take practical steps to reduce their footprint.

White papers

Studies on the return on investment of sustainable IT, getting decision-makers on board, and the environmental footprint of the public cloud.

Our commitment

Digital technology is accelerating the overshoot of planetary boundaries. As citizens and digital professionals, we are committed to reducing its environmental impact by designing and sharing digital commons, so that public and private organisations can align their digital strategy with planetary limits. A community of makers

We move forward by doing, not just talking. Every contribution is welcome, as long as it helps make impact assessment more accessible, usable and understandable for everyone.

Open debate, scientific rigour

Open discussion is part of our DNA. We rely on solid evidence to build shared knowledge, and sometimes to change our own perspective.

Impact first

Everything we do aims at concrete results: commons that are actually used by organisations and help change the trajectory of digital impacts.

For the common good

Our work is open source, open data and Creative Commons. Our goal is to make a critical, informed approach to technology the norm, for everyone.

Get involved and become a member

Everyone has a role to play in reducing the environmental impact of digital technology. Whatever your skills and availability, there’s a way for you to contribute :

  • Workgroups and missions are open to members. You can join as an individual (with a free option for those who need it) or as an organisation, which covers your whole team and features you on our Member Organisations page.
  • Membership is valid for one year and you contribute at your own pace, from occasional help to regular involvement. It only requires accepting our internal rules and sharing the values of our manifesto.

Join a workgroup

Work with other members on a tool, a methodology, a dataset or a study, and help build the commons of tomorrow.
